Our Gardens
Wedgewood Urban Gardens
Founded by Gigi Gaskins in 2005, Wedgewood Urban Gardens (WUG) is a community gardening space located off Wedgewood Avenue, near the Fairgrounds. The Nashville Food Project signed on to help work the space in April 2011. WUG is roughly half an acre and home to various perennials including asparagus, blueberries, strawberries, blackberries and black raspberries. It is also home to an all-natural top-bar beehive, fig trees, numerous herbs and chickens. During the 2011 growing season, The Nashville Food Project grew melons, okra, beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, winter squash, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, zinnias, corn, greens and lettuces. This year we were able to expand the lower level’s spiral herb garden by including a number of new perennial herbs and flowers donated by local nurseries. With the help of volunteers, we have also been able to enlarge the beds in the upper level, allowing us to grow a greater variety of crops and reap more consistent harvests throughout the growing season.
Woodmont Garden
Located behind the offices at The Nashville Food Project on the campus of Woodmont Christian Church, the Woodmont Garden primarily serves as an educational garden space. Many volunteer groups have helped plant, harvest and maintain this garden since it was established in February 2010. The Woodmont Garden is surrounded by a beautiful, split rail, cedar fence built by volunteers and we hope to plant fruit trees soon. Our Woodmont Garden is a good example of an “Edible Churchyard” and TNFP has been instrumental in encouraging other faith communities to grow food to be given away. The Woodmont Garden is always ready to welcome the novice garden volunteer.
