Our Kitchen

It may be a small space, but big things are happening here. The Nashville Food Project kitchen has become a clearing house for hundreds of pounds of food gleaned from local farms, grown in our demonstration gardens, and reclaimed from local supermarkets. Depending on the day, you may find volunteers hard-boiling eggs, slicing day-old bread for croutons, prepping for a hot meal or blanching large yields of produce for winter months.
All of our hot meals are planned and executed by volunteers based on what we have recently harvested in our teaching gardens, gleaned from other local farms/markets, received as food donations or purchased at low cost from the food bank. Our “iron chef” volunteers have no shortage of creativity, and the result is always a hearty and nutritious meal.
Volunteering in the Kitchen
Food Prep at The Nashville Food Project
Food Prep occurs every Tuesday from 10:00am-12:00pm, 1:00pm-3:00pm and Thursday from 1:00pm-3:00pm. This opportunity provides a variety of food preparation tasks such as sorting and washing gleaned produce, assisting with dessert making in the kitchen, making snacks for our truck runs, and slicing donated bread. This opportunity does not require a long term commitment, however, it is necessary for you to register in advance through our website or our partner Hands On Nashville.
